Crane and Diesel Mechanic

Crane and Diesel Mechanic

With one of the largest fleets in the Pacific Northwest, Axis Crane specializes in crane rental, pile driving, and heavy haul freight operations. We are constantly upgrading and expanding our fleet with the newest, safest, and most innovative equipment available on the market.  The crane/diesel mechanic will perform servicing, repairs and maintenance of cranes, trucks and specialty equipment to meet required service levels and quality standards in a timely manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for performing preventive and corrective maintenance on diesel engines, booms, electrical systems (including troubleshooting onboard computer systems), hydraulic systems (booms, outriggers, pumps, valve banks), brakes and other basic components.
  • Perform servicing and repairs on cranes within the workshop, in the yard and on jobsites as required.
  • Properly maintain materials, tools and equipment.
  • Assists with maintaining and monitoring the service schedule for all fleet equipment.
  • Maintaining daily records of shop, labor and materials used as well as properly documenting repairs and inspections performed on each piece of equipment.
  • Accurately maintain service records for each crane detailing all faults, repairs, service dates etc.
  • Assists with the planning and procurement of materials and parts as required.
  • Provide technical advice to other mechanics in the shop ensure shortest possible downtime for vehicles.
  • Follow Axis Crane Safety Program requirements & safe working practices at all times and wear required personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety boots, gloves, safety glasses, etc).
  • Perform other duties that management may reasonably request.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in crane and diesel maintenance.
  • Must have ASE or similar certifications.
  • Will be working on Manitowac, Grove, Demag, Link Belt and Liebherr cranes.
  • Will be working on Mack, Kenworth, Peterbilt, & other trucks.
  • Proven ability to read electrical and hydraulic schematics in successfully troubleshooting problems on those systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing electrical boards and crane computer systems.
  • Must have the ability to work on hydraulic and conventional cranes, forklifts, tractor trailers and miscellaneous specialty equipment.
  • CDL and experience in crane operations is highly desirable.
  • Must be able to work independently with little direct supervision.
  • Strong desire to achieve excellence and an attitude of continuous improvement.
  • Must work well and communicate effectively with operators and other mechanics.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs.

Lead Wind Turbine Technician

Lead Wind Turbine Technician
This position leads one or more teams of wind turbine technicians to perform all aspects of support for Axis Crane’s wind turbine maintenance team.
Responsibilities

  • Perform all mechanical and electrical component maintenance, repair, and replacement of parts to correct malfunctions in various wind turbine generators.
  • Follow basic structured problem-solving process to complete troubleshooting and diagnostic tasks to include the use of diagnostic tools (e.g. fluke meter, hydraulic pressure gauge, etc.).
  • Independently initiate and perform most work tasks, as well as follow defined instructions and maintenance schedules (including annual/semi-annual), executing plans as directed.
  • Troubleshoot complicated mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Perform all mechanical and electrical component maintenance, repair, and replacement of parts.
  • Follow all quality control checks, testing and other processes to safely return equipment to service.
  • Direct, assist and train field crews with trouble-shooting and repairs.
  • Assist/direct high voltage contractors as needed.
  • Demonstrate strong customer service focus at all times.
  • Work closely with project owners and various customers on a daily basis to oversee contractual obligations and activities, which include any portion of the electrical and mechanical equipment used in the wind turbine generator.
  • Help ensure solid communications between field crews, customer and management.
  • Responsible for defining staffing requirements, coaching, training, and corrective action concerning employees and contractors.
  • Establish and optimize work plans and schedules.
  • Proactively look for improvement opportunities to job appropriate processes/procedures.

  • This position will require travel and working overtime, including working a flexible and variable work schedule as needed to meet business objectives. Technicians spend 85% of their time in the field, excluding scheduled training and/or supervisory meetings.

  • Three to five years wind turbine technician experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Associate’s degree preferred.
  • Successfully complete applicable safety and technical training program for the entry level wind turbine technician.

Wind Turbine Technician

Wind Turbine Technician
Responsibilities
Wind Turbine Technicians perform a majority of their maintenance work in the nacelle, where the drive train components and sensitive electronics are housed. Nacelles are built very compactly, and technicians must be able to work in confined spaces, inside the nacelles, hubs and rotors.  Wind turbine technicians regularly clean and lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, and other machinery.  Other responsibilities include:

  • Climb towers to inspect, troubleshoot, or repair turbine equipment
  • Perform routine maintenance on wind turbines
  • Test electrical components and systems, as well as mechanical and hydraulic systems
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical malfunctions
  • Replace worn or malfunctioning components.
  • Grease/torque wind turbines.
  • Use handheld power tools and electrical measuring instruments to troubleshoot any electrical faults in the control cabinets, generator, and other onboard electrical and electronic systems.
  • Perform status checks including clearing error codes on turbines and repairing the problems.
  • Complete work orders, time cards and any other required paperwork for the specific project/task on a daily basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for all aspects of payroll including (but not limited to):
• Daily input of time from crew logs and timesheets
• Export/Import time from Dispatch Software to accounting system and process payroll (weekly, bi-weekly.)
• Transmit direct deposits and distribute payroll checks
• Prepare multiple union reports and related payments (monthly)
• Prepare 401k reports (weekly/semi-monthly)
• Track, prepare and produce Certified Payroll Reports (Oregon BOLI, Washington L & I, Federal Davis Bacon)
• Track and prepare Washington L & I Prevailing Wage Intents and Affidavits
• Process employee reimbursements and garnishments
• Enter equipment allocation usage from crew logs

Other duties:
• Process AR Deposits (daily/weekly)
• Preparation of preliminary invoices for billings, including verification of job costs and sorting/compilation of relevant crew logs (weekly/as needed)
• Participate in pre-qualification documentation as necessary

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

Project Manager/Estimator

Responsible for managing construction projects and preparing cost estimates for Axis Crane projects based on the use of construction plans and industry knowledge. Provide continuous monitoring of open bids, RFP’s and estimates to inform management of either new business awards or lost opportunities. As needed, the Project Manager/Estimator will provide on-site management of assigned projects. Insure project performance through the effective prioritization of safety and environmental needs, scope, schedule, costs, equipment, manpower, materials and quality.

Primary Responsibilities – Cost Estimator:

  • Develop accurate forecast of the cost, size, and duration of future projects. Collect and analyze data on all of the factors that can affect costs, such as materials, labor, location, duration of the project and special equipment requirements.
  • Participate in pre-bidding decision making efforts; review preliminary drawings and specifications, perform site visit, gather information related to site access; surface topography and drainage, and the availability of electricity, water, and other services. Fully document of information obtained.
  • Prepare estimate of the materials, labor, subcontractors and equipment required to perform the work as defined in the statement of work (SOW).
  • Prepare documentation using standard estimating forms, filling in dimensions, numbers of units, and other information.
  • Analyze bids made by subcontractors.
  • Identify equipment needs, sequence of operations, labor specialties, crew size, and physical constraints at the site. Allowances for wasted materials, inclement weather, shipping delays, and other factors that may increase costs must be incorporated in the estimate.
  • Develop a cost summary for the entire project, which includes the costs of labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, overhead, taxes, insurance, markup, and any additional costs that may affect the project.
  • Establish and maintain a database of proposal responses.

Primary Responsibilities – Project Management:

  • Ensure that projects are built according to approved plans, specifications and applicable building codes. Works with city, county, and state officials to assure permits are granted.
  • Direct and oversee on-site pre-construction functions and the day-to- day planning, practices, procedures, and personnel associated with Axis Crane’s construction program and field activities.
  • Ensure optimum utilization of labor, material, subcontractors and other resources across the project.
  • Review, maintain and update the construction schedule and ensure milestone and completion dates are met.
  • Ensure that all legally mandated and required project/company documentation related to project activities are current, accurate and complete.
  • Establish budget, manage and control project costs, and track actual costs relative to bid specifications as the project develops.
  • Prepare field change orders to be signed by project owner or customer representative when requested.
  • Manage the cost of change orders and negotiate and settle and extra costs or mitigate potential claims.
  • Ensure company vehicles and equipment on the project are properly cared for, maintained and put to maximum use while on the job site.
  • Review subcontractor/supplier invoices against field purchase orders and report any discrepancies to the accounting department.
  • Work with accounting department to generate customer billing as agreed to in contract.
  • Ensure that site safety measures meet or exceed the parameters set out by Axis Crane safety program, customer safety requirements, OSHA, and any other applicable authorities (e.g. Washington DOSH).
  • Prepare and coordinate project closeout activities including punch lists or customer acceptance documentation.
  • Ensure hourly time cards are submitted, reviewed and approved with all necessary details for job costing.

Secondary Functions:

  • Participate in Operations Team meetings to share project status, upcoming needs and assist other sections as needed.
  • Represent the company externally to customers, contractors, government agencies and the general public.
  • Maintain and monitor staffing, skill levels, expectations and motivation to achieve company and project requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

The Project Manager/Estimator must have strong math and analytical skills.  He/she must be highly proficient at reading and understanding blueprints, statements of work and specifications related to each specific job. A thorough understanding of computers, especially word processing and spreadsheet programs is required as well as a demonstrated ability to use complex project management and cost accounting/estimating software.  Additional requirements include:

  • A combination of a Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Engineering and Architecture, plus ten years of experience in a senior-level position in the construction industry.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with customers, subcontractors, employees and management with experience collaborating in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in construction processes and successful estimate preparation.
  • Review/revise contracts, negotiate, and ensure change management controls are in place.
  • Knowledge of job costing and budgeting using automated accounting and reporting systems.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies, and delivering results.
  • Flexible and a self-starter; able to multi-task while also being highly detail-oriented.
